The Metro — Meeting the Moment

Meeting the Moment

Welcome

Leaning into legacy, learning, loving and leading.

Metropolitan is a place to encounter God, grow in the Word, develop meaningful relationships and put faith into action. Around Birmingham we are known as The Metro — a community of believers learning to love God and neighbor together. You do not have to walk through life alone.

Our Story

A witness formed by faith and the struggle for freedom.

Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church was organized in Birmingham in 1885 and became a vital spiritual and civic anchor during the Civil Rights Movement. As a Movement Church, Metropolitan frequently hosted Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights mass meetings under the wider organizing efforts of leaders including Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. Its basement became a training ground where youth and student marchers learned the disciplined principles of Christian nonviolence before entering the streets. That legacy is not decoration; it is an invitation to present-day discipleship and service.

Our Pastor & First Lady

Meet Our Pastor & First Lady

Rev. Dr. Erskine Faush, Jr. is a passionate and purposeful servant leader working alongside his wife and partner, Andrea Cooper Faush, a gracious and giving believer. They both are respected and awarded senior leaders — educated, credentialed and serving in numerous capacities — but it is their heart and commitment that we thank God for.

“We are both so honored and humbled to return home to Metropolitan. It is the place of our beginnings and the promise of our future. As a son of the church, I am grateful for the foundation my Mom and Dad laid, having served this church and community for more than two decades. This is the altar where my wife and I married and our children were baptized. And while I cherish the memories, I am convinced our best days are still ahead. Every day, every moment, every person is not my work but my ministry and my calling. I’ll add to Pastor by saying serving begins with love: I love the Lord. He continues to show up for me. I love His people because serving them is how I honor Him.”

Life asks a lot of us. We’re working, raising families, caring for loved ones, making decisions, and trying to find time to hear God’s voice in the middle of it all. We want this church to be a place where you can breathe, belong, and discover what God is calling you to do in this season of your life.

Together, we believe The Metro is a place, a people and a purpose positioned for meeting the moment. We are leaning into our legacy, learning across generations, loving our neighbors, and leading with faith. We hear the call to serve this present age, and we believe there is room for you in that calling.

Whether you grew up in church, are finding your way back, or are walking in for the first time, come as you are. Bring your family. Bring your questions. We would love to meet you and see what God will do as we grow together.

Prayer Ministry

Whatever you are carrying, you do not have to carry it alone.

Share your request with Metropolitan. Our digital prayer assistant can pray with you now and, if you choose, send your request to our Prayer Agents or pastoral team for personal follow-up.

A first response within seconds, any hour of the day.

Urgent needs are brought to leadership immediately.

Ordinary human follow-up within twenty-four hours.

A seven-day check-in whenever you give permission.

People, not machines, give pastoral care

The assistant is artificial intelligence. It can welcome you, pray Scripture with you and carry your request to the right people. It does not counsel, it does not speak for God, and it never replaces your pastor. Ministry leaders remain responsible for pastoral counsel, theological judgment and crisis response.

You are talking with an automated prayer assistant. It is artificial intelligence — not a pastor, a counselor, or God. It can pray Scripture with you and pass your request to real people at Metropolitan.

Peace to you. I am Metropolitan's digital prayer assistant — an AI helper, not a pastor. Tell me what you are carrying, and I will pray a word of Scripture with you and make sure a person from Metropolitan sees your request.

How may we respond?

Requests go to Metropolitan's pastoral leadership and Prayer Agents only. They are never shared with the congregation without your separate written permission, are kept for one year so we can follow up, and can be deleted at any time by asking the church office. This form is not emergency care. If you are in danger or thinking of harming yourself, call 911 or call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Support the Mission

Metropolitan has always been more than a building.

It is a witness, a gathering place and a ministry serving Birmingham. Your prayers, presence, service and generosity help us extend that witness into a new generation.
